Named “Male Singer of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association on half a dozen occasions in the past ten years, and declared by The New York Times as, “…standout male vocalist of our time.”, Elling is more like a virtuoso jazz instrumentalist than a vocalist with his command of rhythm, texture, phrasing, and dynamics. Every record he has made has also been Grammy nominated. Elling’s rich baritone spans four octaves and features both astonishing technical mastery and emotional depth. His repertoire includes original compositions and modern interpretations of standards, all of which are springboards for inspired improvisation, scatting, spoken word, and poetry.
